Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Rome, Italy)

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore was basically right up the street from our hotel.  It celebrates Mary, the mother of Jesus.  It is one of Rome's oldest and best preserved churches.  It was built in AD 432 on the spot where a 3rd century pope witnessed a miraculous midsummer snowfall (reenacted every August 15th).
It is also one of the four Patriarchal Basilicas of Rome.  Maggiore indicates that this church, a Vatican possession, was much more important than other churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The interior of the church contains mosaics, said to be some of Rome's best surviving.  Unfortunately, we did not enter the church to see these.
