Harvest Monday 8/22/11

The cucumbers are finally picking up the pace. This week I've harvested a few more Parisian Pickling Cucumbers and some yummy Lemon Cucumbers. I also harvested more strawberries. I had a mix of Shishito Peppers, Jalapenos and Italian Pepperoncinis. My first Sungold Tomatoes ripened this week. They were so good and worth the long wait for! A few more green beans were also harvested early in the week.
I ended up making refrigerator pickles with the cucumbers, pepperoncinis, jalapenos and green tomatoes.

Later in the week I harvested more tomatoes: Sungold, a few Glaciers and my first Black Plum. Yummy! I also picked some basil to make a sun-dried tomato pesto.

Happy Harvest!!

Looks like you had a great week!

I've kind of given up on my pepperoncini plant. It's produced so many peppers, and I just don't have any idea what to do with them anymore. I've pickled them, and I've tried just eating them after washing. Mine are extremely seedy. That kills my enjoyment of them :(

I didn't recognize the lemon cucumbers at first - so unique. You have a nice variety of tomatoes. I eat the Sungolds like candy this time of year!

Beautiful vegetables. I like all of your efforts at pickling. Pickles are one of my favorite things. Have you ever tried half-sour pickles, a New York deli thing? They halved cukes in a jar with dill, garlic and spices and a mild hot brine, leave overnight, then refrigerate. I use the recipe from the Victory Garden Cookbook.

Pickled peppers. You must be after my sons heart. He loves when I pickle our hot peppers.

Those strawberries are just lovely! What is your secret? ;)

Woo tomatoes! It is intersting to see how everyone's harvests are progressing... Some people are almost done with tomatoes while others are just getting started.

I like the refrigerator cukes. Green tomatoes are such a great idea; a great way to use all those tomatoes that the season change doesn't give time to. Thanks for the recipe.

Lots of good eating for you this week! The Sun Golds are a juicy little treat aren't they? I also got a pot of refrigerator dills started this weekend and will be adding the ones and twos of cucumbers that come ready for harvest before the big flush of cucumbers comes on that I want for my annual batch of dill pickle relish. I think I almost prefer the refrigerator dills to normally processed dill pickles to be honest.

OOOO yum - I want to eat your harvest - all the things I'm currently missing as its winter here. Those Lemon cukes look interesting.

robin: Haha, I know right? These will go into the refrigerator pickle jar. Instant gratification. My canned pickles need to soak up juices for a whole month first!

ben: Sorry for your seedy pepperoncinis. I don't have any suggestions on how to use them. I grew them just to make pickled peppers.

allison: Thanks!

JGH: I love the lemon cucumbers. So cute and the perfect snack cuke! Most of the sungolds don't make it outta the garden. I like to snack as I'm gardening!

sarada: Thanks! It was a yummy pesto!

dave: Thanks for the half sour pickle tip! I'll definitely have to try that. Sounds delicious!

barbie: Your son has good taste! I love pickled peppers too! I can't wait for my jalapenos and hot cherry bombs to be ready for pickling!

shawn ann: Thanks! Crazy enough, the strawberries are in a topsy turvy. I'm sure it's not my green thumb!

prairie cat: I'm just starting out on my tomato adventure. I just hope I get enough for sauce and salsa before it gets too cool!

jody: If you do a search, there's a specific green pickled tomato refrigerator recipe on my blog that I tried last year. I really liked the taste of those if you just have green tomatoes.

mac: Yeah we're sooo behind here. I just hope we have summer veggies to harvest before it's fall!!

kitsapFG: I love the crunch of refrigerator dills! YUMMY!!

liz: I'll be drooling over your garden come winters! ;0)

daphne: Thanks!
