Onions having a bad hair day

My onions refuse to be normal. They won't grow straight up. It's like a perpetual bad hair day. I think it's because my grow lights in the garage aren't directly over the seedlings. The light is off to the side and is reflected inside. I think it's confusing my seedlings. They seem to be tolerating the crazy lighting situation though.

This weekend I trimmed some of the 1st batch of Walla Walla onions and gave my 2nd batch of Walla Walla and Copra onions their first haircut.

1st batch of Walla Walla Onions - Day # 28

2nd batch of Walla Walla and Copra onions - Day #14

So far so good on the onion front!

In this case, I hope hair style doesn't matter! =0)

Holly, the onion babies look great- bad hair or no :). I've been thinking of starting onions, I've never grown them, surprising as that is to me. Maybe this will be the year. I see you're in OR- where abouts? Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'll be sure to visit regularly for some yummy recipe ideas for all the food I grow- that is one thing I truly need help with!

Thanks for visiting Tessa! I'm in Tigard! I noticed you were in Oregon also! Yeah Oregon!

This is my crash course with onions (and other veggies) this year. I hope you'll try them too so we can compare notes. My original onion post is on the right (sidebar). Feel free to read up on what I found on growing them from seed.

This will be my first year growing onions from seed too. Is it typical to give it a haircut? Does that help with their growth?

Seeing your recent seed sowings has got me thinking i should sow some herbs. Last night i found parsley & coriander seeds so think I'll sow these during the week. I think your onions will straighten over the coming weeks.

meemsnyc-From what I read, cutting them down to about 3 inches high every few weeks help the onions concentrate on building a healthier root system (and keeps them from flopping over).

fer-Glad someone else has plants with bad hair days too! =0)

Lrong-Thanks for visiting my blog! Another one with bad hair plants! Hooray! Let's hope they know what to do once they get outside!

Why I Garden-Thanks for the comments! I started the parsley early since I read it takes a long time to germinate. I've never grown parsley from seed before. I usually buy my herbs as starter plants (except basil). I hope to save money this year!
