Travels: Thailand

Okay so I'm making my final travel arrangements for Thailand and I'm getting so excited. The countdown begins!! It was hard to get too excited earlier cause the trip seemed sooo far away. Now it's less than 1 month away!!
I decided to share some of the cool pics I've come across while doing my research. All pictures are from I'm spending 2 weeks in Thailand. I decided to travel to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Ko Phi Phi and Krabi. There maybe time for some other adventures but that's what I've narrowed it down to for now.
I'll definitely keep you posted!!

Restaurant Rambling: Toro Bravo

Okay so I've been wanting to check out Toro Bravo for some time now. It's been named restaurant of the year. It is a Spanish tapas place. I've heard so many good things about it but among the comments was that it was always crowded. all know that when I'm hungry, I'm HUNGRY!! I'm not sure I can wait, even if the food is fantastic.

Well a friend and I made plans to visit the restaurant. I was prepared. I was hungry but not ravenous starving. I was prepared for the wait. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait. Hmmm...not bad, not bad at all. We sat in the small aclove off to the side to wait. We were told we could also order starters there while waiting for a table. While we were drooling over the menu, the hostess popped back in after 5 minutes. There was space at the chef's bar. Would we like to sit there?? Hell yeah!!

Everything on the menu looks fabulous. I will definitely have to be back to try everything. In fact I wanted to order one of everything!! My friend and I were starving by this time. We decided to try the paella after we saw it whiz by us. It smelled absolutely delicious and looked equally so. One order of the Paella Toro $19. We also ordered the Salt Cod Fritters with Aioli $8 and the Sauteed Chanterelles on Griddled Bread $7. OMG, the food here is heavenly.

The Cod fritters were the first out. They were just the right amount of saltiness to complement the garlicy aioli. Yum yum yum! The order comes with about 5-6 fritters. Next came the chanterelles. These were absolutely heavenly. They were sauteed in a brown cream sauce. I can't tell you what was in the sauce but it was soo good. The bread with it made it that much more yummy! The last course was the paella. It was so good. Some of the best I've tasted. It was mingled with a nice assortment of chorizo, mussels, clams, and shrimp.

Remember how I said we were both starving? All that food was enough to make us throw in the towel. We didn't even have room for dessert and they looked mighty good. Hands down a great experience. Definitely worth coming back for more!!

Restaurant Rambling: Pok Pok

I *heart* Pok Pok. I've been there a few times thus far. My favorite there is the Vietnamese Chicken Wings. They are sooooo good!! We started a dinner group at work. Every month we'll pick a new restaurant to try out.

This month we decided to try Pok Pok after I gave it rave reviews. I should correct myself. Pok Pok is the name of the take out shack. Whiskey Soda Lounge is the name of the restaurant side of things. I usually use Pok Pok to identify the whole set up.

A group of 11 of us converged onto the restaurant last week. Pok Pok specializes in Northern Thai food. In fact, part of my trip to Thailand will be a culinary tour for 4 days with the owner of Pok Pok, Andy, and his business partner who lives in Chiang Mai, Sonny. I'm soooo excited about that aspect of the trip.

Anywho. We all met at Pok Pok and had a blast. I had never been there for dinner before. The dinner menu is very extensive. So many choices....what to eat?? I decided on the Kuung Op Wun Sen (wild caught gulf prawns baked in a clay pot over charcoal w/ pork belly, whiskey, soy, ginger, cilantro root, black pepper, Chinese celery & bean thread noodles) for $14.00. It was so good! Everyone loved the food. Ahhh....Pok Pok! A restaurant after my heart!

Travels: San Diego

Well I know I took this trip a while ago but I wanted to post pics. We spent most of our time at the San Diego Zoo, Sea World and down at the beach. It was my niece's first experience playing in sand. She freaked out a bit at first, then simmered down. She loved playing in the sand and didn't want to leave. I got some great pics of her playing but won't dare post her pictures as I'm sure my brother would kill me! Enjoy San Diego....

Lazy Sunday Morning

I have to apologize for neglecting my blog. I blame it all on my facebook friends. Up until this point I've managed to avoid facebook. Social site? BLECH!! Then they MADE me do it. I'm hooked. I've re-connected with people I haven't seen or spoken to in years. I blame them. It's all their fault!! Facebook made me do it!!

Sunburned in San Diego

I'm back!! Okay so note to may not think San Diego is hot. Therefore you may not think you will need sunscreen while out and about. May I be a public service reminder to wear sunscreen? OUCH! I got burnt today watching Shamu at Sea World. Luckily my daily facial lotion has SPF and escaped unscathed. My arms however, are another store.

I was so hungry after arriving back in Portland. I stopped at New Seasons on my way home. I was actually craving one of their pulled pork sandwiches. I was disappointed to find out that they're re-vamping their specialty sandwiches. Starting on Wednesday, they're featuring all new fall sandwiches. I saw the list and they sound yummy!! So I hid my disappointment and decided on one of their summer sandwiches (which were still on the menu and the sandwich guy promised me he had enough ingredients to make). I selected the roast beef with blue cheese spread and caramelized onions on a french roll. OMG! It was so good! Okay, anyone who knows me well will know that I do NOT like onions. It's my thing. Well I ate this sandwich. Sorry to say that by the time you read this, my roast beef sandwich will likely be gone. But don't forget to stop by New Seasons and check out the new sandwiches. They sounds really really good!!
